There is already sufficient evidence concerning the material properties of steel-fibre concrete which is soundly based on theoretical models and experimental results. The use of steel-fibre shotcrete in tunnelling is being contemplated in many quarters, but there are hardly any examples of its use of any significance. There is a lack of recognized design rules and of methods for trouble-free and economic application. The report deals briefly with the current state of material technology, and then with production methods and the associated problems. The use of shotcrete and of in-situ concrete in tunnelling and mining is examined for single-layer lining construction. A proposal for a design theory should aid in determining thicknesses. Finally there are reports on current research projects in which the emphasis is on improving the rebound behaviour and further development of the method. /TRRL/ conference is IRRD no 308251.
