1) the trend in car construction is based on the need for the car to suit the person and not the person the car. The striving towards structural safety is internationally unmistakeable. The trend leads to lighter weight cars. For the security of the occupants safety bodies are constructed on the crumple principle. The reciprocating piston engine remains without competition; in recent years engines have become smaller and lighter but at the same time with better performance. The diesel motor continues to be used in more cars. - 2) in form little change will take place in future cars. Apart from this the trend towards practical universal middle-class cars is obvious. A reduction in wind resistance is recommended as a means of reducing fuel consumption. It is particularly important to devote greater resources to the front and passenger compartment to improve the safety of car occupants. There is at present no alternative to the seat belt. - 3) various possible improvements are described using key-words. - 4) to induce the construction of smaller cars with lower performance and economical fuel comsumption limitations have been introduced in the USA upon fuel consumption for the total production of the present manufacturers. The limits are described in detail. (TRRL)
