STUDDED TYRES. EXPERIMENTS 1977 - TESTS WITH THE HEAVY-VEHICLE CIRCULAR TEST TRACK, THE NEW SMALL HEAVY-VEHICLE CARRIAGE AND THE PASSENGER-CAR CAROUSEL

LES PNEUS A CRAMPONS-EXPERIMENTATION 1977-ESSAIS AVEC LE MANEGE POIDS LOURDS, LE NOUVEAU CHARIOT PETITS POIDS LOURDS ET LE CARROUSEL TOURISME

Tests carried out during the 1966-1967 winter necessitated the use of all installations in Pont-a-Mousson: the heavy-vehicle circular test track, passenger-car carousel and the new small heavy-vehicle carriage. This carriage, designed and developed by the Research Centre of the Fonderies in Pont-a-Mousson, is intended for the study of loads per wheel between 1 and 3 metric tons. This new equipment proved very satisfactory. The tests showed that wear caused by small heavy vehicles was not very different from that caused by large heavy vehicles and was still approximately twenty times greater than that caused by cars. These results do not allow for more flexibility in the present regulations. The influence of speed was also demonstrated. The level of wear is at least four times higher at 120 km/h than at 60 km/h; it seems that, there also, it is difficult to lift the present 90 km/h speed limit. The results also showed that in the case of studs, the diameter of which is equal to or smaller than 6 mm, the presence of a second flange does not appear to increase the aggressively of the studs.
