RESULTS FROM WIND TUNNEL RESEARCH ON THE WIND RESISTANCE OF HEAVY GOODS VEHICLES

UEBER DEN LUFTWIDERSTAND VON FERNLASTZUEGEN, ERGEBNISSE AUS MODELLMESSUNGEN IM WINDKANAL

The report provides description and results of air resistance tests upon lorries and articulated vehicles in wind tunnels, which were carried out as part of the MAN research programme "possibilities for the economic use of energy by commercial vehicles". The conclusions from three studies are provided with the help of graphical descriptions and illustrations: (1) wind resistance measurements for standard lorries and articulated vehicles with various superstructures: (2) the effectiveness of different types of attachments in reducing wind resistance, such as rounding the edges at the front of the superstructure, fairing on the cab roof, wind stabilizers, rounded edges to the front of the trailer or a combination of these two measures in order to improve the aerodynamic conditions between vehicle and trailer, side coverings, front end skirting, vertical fairing or a rounded top cover as a measure to reduce wind resistance: (3) the influence of cab shape on wind resistance from the viewpoint of future development, by which aerodynamic improvements such as, for example, a streamlined shape may be established in terms of optimum effectiveness.
