BRAKE FLUID AS A SAFETY FACTOR IN VEHICLE CONSTRUCTION

DIE BREMSFLUESSIGKEIT ALS SICHERHEITSFAKTOR IM KRAFTFAHRZEUGBAU

The failure of hydraulically operated brakes in a vehicle because of formation of steam bubbles in the brake fluid can lead to accidents. For this reason various brake fluids (based on polyglycols, mineral oils and silicon) were studied in regard to their temperature - viscosity, their hydroscopy and their lubricating power. From the results, recommendations regarding maintenance and checking of the braking systems, with particular attention to the brake fluids, were developed. The following recommendations were produced by the Federal Ministry for Transport: brake fluid change within a maximum of 24 months or 50000 km, adherence to all service recommendations (surveillance of records). Further information for workshops as regards storage, stock, the lifespan of opened stock and care in changing brake fluids. Filling by the manufacturer in stock sizes which may be used over a short period of time. (TRRL)
