FIVE YEARS OF TESTS ON THE BEHAVIOUR OF SURFACE DRESSINGS IN CONCRETE PAVEMENTS. EXPERIMENTAL SECTIONS ON THE A13 NORMANDIE MOTORWAY

CINQ ANS D'EXPERIENCE DE COMPORTEMENT D'ENDUITS SUPERFICIELS SUR CHAUSSEE EN BETON - PLANCHES EXPERIMENTALES DE L'AUTHOROUTE DE NORMANKIE (A13)

The author outlines the lessons to be derived from the behaviour of surface dressings, in particular as regards the evolution in their non-skid properties, after 5 years of tests conducted under heavy traffic. Three experimental sections were built: an inverted two-course system containing vinyl epanvyl 700 tar, an inverted two-course system containing elastomer-bitumen, a double one-layer system with chippings precoated with elastomer-bitumen and spread on the surface. The visual aspect remains satisfactory after 5 years. Aggregates become progressively worn; there are deteriorations at the level of construction joints in the concrete slabs. The deteriorations can be due to: penetration of chippings in joints and wear of the binder, lack of adhesion of binders on the joint sealing compound or accelerated wear of the surface dressing following the dynamic stresses imposed by moving vehicles. As regards surface roughness, the evolution was very similar in the 3 sections. Sand patch depths, after a sharp drop during the first year, are between 0,8 and 1,2 after 5 years. (TRRL)
