ELASTIC AND PLASTIC PREDICTIONS OF SLAB REINFORCEMENT REQUIREMENTS

A series of uniformly loaded elastic sandwich slabs with various shapes and boundary conditions is analysed using thin plate bending elements. The total reinforcement requirements of these slabs are then inferred using the moment volume integral, in many cases the moment volumes agreeing closely with those obtained by exact plastic optimum design techniques. A simple iterative redesign technique is then applied. Although relatively coarse meshes are used in some cases, the elastic finite element results closely match the exact plastic values in almost every case. A significant finding is that a widely used yield line analysis calculation appears inconsistent with the results from finite element analysis and the plastic optimum techniques. (A). (TRRL)
