THE CONSTRUCTION OF LARGE BRIDGES IN THE LIESER VALLEY AS PART OF THE TAUERN MOTORWAY

DER BAU VON GROSSBRUECKEN IM LIESERTAL IM ZUGE DER TAUERNAUTOBAHN

The construction of the section from Rennweg to Gmund poses particularly difficult problems to the engineer. Because of the very steep valley sides throughout the length and the very difficult geological conditions it is necessary to construct about two thirds of the length of the motorway on bridges. This results in the need to build about 8 km of bridges in a maximum construction time of 3 years. By letting the bridge construction contracts in lengths of up to 2.6 km this exercise can be accomplished. With reference to a series of different projects and construction contracts, in which the construction company Rella and Co is playing a controlling part, not only in the planning but also in its execution, comment is made upon the installation of heavy moving formwork, cantilevers using moving forms, classical cantilevering using counterweights and the application of launching process. There is also a short summary of the remaining bridge contracts and their construction methods. (TRRL)
