TECHNICAL NOTE. A ROCK MACHINABILITY TESTING SYSTEM AND PREDICTION OF PRODUCTIVITY OF TUNNELLING MACHINES
A portable rock machinability tester has been developed and evaluated in laboratory and in field tests. A measure of the cutting force used in rock cutting with drag bits is obtained by measuring the normal force with a Bourdon pressure gauge. The mean peak value of the reading of the Bourdon gauge (kg/sq cm) is defined as the rock machinability index. Good correlation between rock machinability index and cutting force has been obtained in laboratory tests. The productivity of the tunnelling machine is measured on the same rock face immediately after or before the rock machinability index is measured. At present a poor correlation of the rock machinability with the specific productivity of a tunnelling machine is obtained, however, it is expected that a better correlation curve will shortly be obtained.
