THE SHAPING AND DIMENSIONING OF RIGID FOAM OBJECTS

Simple relations for calculating the tensile compressive and shear strength of rigid foam objects can be derived from model simulation and qualitative consideration of the failure and deformation mechanisms. The distortion of two material-systems due to thermal expansion can be examined from these. Independent of the material under examination the dimensional behaviour of rigid foam objects depends on the moulding of the component shape. In order to calculate the distortion behaviour of reinforced sections (with steel, aluminium etc) the relations described can be used if the connection the Kuratorium for Road Safety has carried out a two-material-system used in this case is applied to a reinforced rigid foam system. The most important rules regarding the dimensional behaviour are: (1) symmetrical construction so that the eccentricities from the centre of gravity line are small, and (2) high cross-sectional stiffness, so that a high moment of resistance results to resist distortion.
