THE CARS AND THE AIR POLLUTION - A MAPPING OF THE PROBLEM. RESEARCH PROGRAM

A committee on automobile gas exhausts, appointed by the government, describes in this report the present state of the committee's work. The final report is scheduled in 1981. The main aims of this report are: (1) to show the background and present state of the air pollution problem caused by automobile gas exhausts. Here the report discusses the development of the society and traffic politics, the air pollution of gas exhausts, the quality of the air in Swedish cities, the effect of gas exhausts on health and the environment, and measures taken against the air pollution in Sweden and other countries. (2) To show and restrict which questions the committee considers are to be dealt with in the main report. The first main question is to map and evaluate how seriously the automobile gas exhausts affect health and environment. Secondly to map and evaluate the technically possible measures to be taken in order to decrease the air pollution caused by automobiles. The third main question is the mapping and evaluating of possible economic and other feedbacks, the different measures will have. (3) To show the research program of the committee. Certain examinations have taken place, e.g. on the effect of air pollution on the health, the relation traffic-air quality, traffic planning models and studies of model places, and the air pollution caused by various vehicles. (4) To put forth the committee's view of the need for further research and development. (TRRL)
