STRESS DISTRIBUTION IN A SAMPLE WITH GIVEN SLIP SURFACES SUBJECTED TO DIRECT SHEAR TESTS

The determination of the friction at joint surfaces is nowadays part of the standard programme of soil mechanics tests. The angle of friction is thus determined from the stresses, which are themselves calculated from the external loads and the nominal separation area dimensions. In so far as the assumption of such stress conditions can be justified, a check is made for the two dimensional case on the basis of photo-elastic tests and calculations with finite elements. The influence of the test sample shape and the introduction of the external loads is particularly considered here. The results demonstrate that flat test sample shapes encourage a homogeneous stress distribution in the separation surfaces studied and correspond best to the conditions in-situ. (TRRL)
