SIX THESES ON THE SITUATION AND DEVELOPMENT OF TRAFFIC EDUCATION IN FIRST GRADE SECONDARY SCHOOLS

SECHS THESEN ZUR SITUATION UND ENTWICKLUNG DER VERKEHRSERZIEHUNG IN DER SEKUNDARSTUFE I

The report discusses six theses on the situation and development of traffic education in the first grade of secondary schools. There has long been unanimity on the necessity for and goals of traffic instruction, but for its realisation in the school, particularly at secondary level, important provisions are missing. The subject of traffic education should not be limited to the technically-orientated traffic system but should be understood as a component of the social-political situation. A multi-disciplinary solution depends upon thematic co-ordination and co-operative teaching models with emphasis upon scientific, technical-socio-economic and social subjects. The condition for the realization of this idea is the institutionalization of the co-operation process in schools, particularly further development of the conference and advisory functions. The teaching methods for traffic as a subject, like those of its principal constituents, need to be orientated towards the experience, interest and requirements of the students and towards environmental needs. Also the qualification of the teacher of traffic instruction results from fundamental interdisciplinary co-operation and individual specialisation. It requires close co-operation with high schools, professional instruction and further education. (TRRL)
