SECURITY IN DRIVING THE ARLBERG ROAD TUNNEL - ADAPTATION TO ROCK CONDITIONS BY MEANS OF GEOTECHNICAL MEASUREMENTS

The Arlbeg Tunnel (1 = 14 km) is being driven according to the new Austrian tunnelling method and is situated throughout in the Phyllit-Gneiss Strata on the northen edge of the central Alps. The stratification lies steeply and falls at an angle of 60 to 80 degrees towards the south. The direction is almost parallel to the tunnel axis. These conditions have shown themselves to be most unfavourable for driving. The tunnel is being driven from both sides with calotte and bench heading. In the course of excavation it was shown very quickly that the rock was under severe pressure and that considerable rock movement was taking place. It was shown that the horizontal convergence movement represented a very good measure of the necessary support resistance. In particular the speed of deformation in the first two days could be used as a criterion for security and safety measures. If the deformation did not exceed 5 cm after two days, the security measures were sufficient. Only when this dimension was exceeded did the safety measures hve to be increased. In the same way a substantial decrease in the degree of deformation allowed a reduction in the security measures. With these criteria further progress could be made and with horizontal convergence movements of up to 60 cm satisfactory control was exercised. At this time anchors of 4, 6, 9 and 12 cm length were used. The extent of deformation is dependent upon the rock conditions and must never be generalized. The importance of the influence of the stratification surfaces relative to the direction of the drive is shown to be great by the fact that the short communication tunnel, which was driven vertically to the tunnel axis in the direction of the second tube, showed only a fraction of the deformation compared to the main tunnel.
