ROAD SAFETY: 1977, THE YEAR WITH THE FEWEST FATALITIES OVER THE LAST 10 YEARS

During 1977 the accident rate fell by 5% in spite of a traffic increase of 2.6%. The improvement recorded concerned particularly motorcyclists since on the national policed network, the number of dead fell by 14% in that category. A new action programme leading to a higher reduction in accidents is to be elaborated by the road safety committee. This paper ends with a review of safety measures taken in 1977 concerning the transport of children, the installation of reflectors on the two driving wheels, safety belts fixed to the back seat, pedestrian safety, overtaking.
