RESERVES IN AERODYNAMICS. REDUCTION IN THE AIR RESISTANCE IN CARS AND LORRIES - REPORT ON A VDI CONFERENCE IN STUTTGART
RESERVEN IN DER AERODYNAMIK. VERRINGERUNG DES LUFTWIDERSTANDES BEI PERSONEN- UND LASTWAGEN-BERICHT VON EINER VDI-TAGUNG IN STUTTGART
This paper gives a report on the annual conference of the German society for automobile engineering of the VDI in Stuttgart. The possibilities and the limits of reduction of the air resistance for cars and lorries is discussed. It appears that a 10 percent reduction in the air resistance leads to a 3 to 4 percent saving in fuel, and that particularly for lorries, a reduction in the air resistance can lead to lower fuel consumption. In the case of a 38 tonne trailer, the cw coefficient can be reduced by 23 percent by means of tests in a wind tunnel. (TRRL)
