Improving Work Zones Every Day, in Every Way

Highway work zones are unavoidable and essential features of the nation's traffic environment. However, work zones create inevitable delays and are the scene of frequent crashes, In 2015 35,000 people were injured in work-zone crashes and 700 people lost their lives. This article describes the United States Federal Highway Administration's (FHWA) recent efforts to improve and manage safer and more efficient traffic control in work zones. The Smarter Work Zones initiative, begun in 2015 as part of round three of FHWA’s Every Day Counts program, is highlighted.
