INVESTIGATION INTO DRIVING BEHAVIOUR AT ROAD CROSSINGS CONTROLLED BY TRAFFIC LIGHTS

In the summer of 1976 driving behaviour at crossings with traffic light control was investigated in relation to the personal characteristics of the vehicle drivers. The results are limited to speed measurements at 25 and 75 metre distances from the lights on 300 vehicles following each other. The drivers were stopped approximately 200 metres after the crossing and requested to fill in a questionnaire. Amongst other things the following results were produced from this investigation: drivers adjust their speed some distance from the lights to suit the cycle of the traffic lights. Different driving speeds are chosen in general and also in critical phases of the light sequence, depending on the age of the driver. Drivers over 55 years generally drive more slowly. Drivers with different experience exhibit different driving behaviour. Opportunist drivers reduce speed more severly in the immediate vicinity of the crossing, use the green-yellow chance hesitantly and prepare themselves for the road to clear at the red-yellow phase by dawdling. Also familiarity with the vehicle and the route influence driving behaviour at the crossing; also personal driving style and situation (pressure of time). There then follows in the paper recommendations for optimising the control of traffic and improving road safety so that the differences in behaviour from one driver to another are kept as small as possible.
