INFLUENCE OF MIX-DESIGN PARAMETERS ON THE MODULUS AND RESISTANCE OF GRAVEL-BITUMEN TO FATIGUE

INFLUENCE DES PARAMETRES DE FORMULATION SUR LE MODULE ET LA RESISTANCE A LA FATIGUE DES GRAVES-BITUME

The authors describe the application of the method used at the LCPC for fatige studies to the investigation into the influence of mix-design parameters on the mechanical properties: moduli and resistance to fatigue. After studying the voids content, bitumen and fines content, angularity and mineralogical nature of aggregates, they show that: (1) the variations of different parameters have a greater influence on fatigue life than on moduli; (2) the voids content plays an essential part; (3) the resistance to fatigue increases with the binder content; (4) the modulus reaches a maximum when the binder content increases; (5) eolian sand has a harmful effect; (6) it is dangerous to exceed a certain proportion of fines; (7) the optimum fines/bitumen ratio is approximately 2. A comparison is made of the various mix-design formulae studied as regards pavement design problems. (TRRL)
