IMPORTANT DATA CONCERNING THE ROAD HOLDING OF VEHICLES

Recently many publications have appeared with numerous recommendations concerning the road holding of vehicles and how a vehicle can be made to suit the driver more favourably. The purpose of this paper is to condense this volume of information to a manageable size. A complex frequency path is assumed for the vehicle, which only requires consideration in the frequency range important for the stability behaviour of the control system driver-vehicle between 0 to 0.5 hertz. Following this the complex frequency path can be approximately obtained from results taken from driving around a bend and by the "reaction-time of the vehicle". This is calculated from the four measurements: deviation angle velocity, angle of float, lateral acceleration and moment on the steering wheel related to the angle of strike on the steering wheel. From these considerations it can be seen that, in addition to driving speed, the following six typical measurements taken on the vehicle are important: vehicle height, centre of gravity position, steering sensitivity, lateral stiffness of the tyres (and axles) related to wheel load, the relation between the lateral stiffness moments and a dimension proportional to the moment on the steering wheel.
