THE GREAT SAVER. DIESELS ARE THE BEST ENERGY CONVERTERS
DAS GROSSE SPAREN. DER DIESEL IST DER BESTE ENERGIEVERWERTER
The Brazilian government has decided to introduce pure alcohol (ethanol) as a substitute fuel during the course of the next few years. The report is concerned with the problem of how diesel engines may be operated with substitute fuels. A bus was converted to run not only on diesel fuel but also upon a mixture of diesel and petrol and also upon ethanol prepared for use in diesel operations. Technically it is possible, by the addition of about 10% of ignition accelerator with alcohol, to drive quite ordinary diesel motors. Although the economic production of suitable ignition accelerators from possible vegetable materials has not yet been clarified, the possibility still exists of reducing the diesel fuel requirement by mixing distillate petrol with diesel oil. This may be added up to 30% by volume of the diesel oil without requiring modifications to the diesel engine. In recent years experiments have also taken place at various sites on the use of diesel-oil-water emulsions. From present-day knowledge it would be possible to save about 8% of the world-wide diesel fuel consumption, if all diesel engines were driven by diesel-oil-water emulsions. A "savings diagram" is provided to show what costs and energy quantities could be saved by the different engine adjustments. (TRRL)
