THE EXTENT OF NUISANCE REACTION TO TRAFFIC NOISE

An investigation using questionnaires was carried out amongst the inhabitants of eight streets each having defined noise levels. The variation in the traffic noise levels was so selected, that urban-type noise zones of from 55 to 80 db(a) were covered. The results of the survey were analysed by means of the principal component process. The following three factors emerged: the generalised, the sensory and the acoustic-physical annoyance reaction. In the area of investigation having 55 to 62 db(a) levels, the degree of annoyance was widely centralised and associated with perception of sounds described as "disturbing" or "annoying". Above about 62 db(a) the perceptive and estimated irritation aspects of annoyance are increased and altered by the subjective-centred experience of encroachment upon everyday activities. The displacement in the qualitive system of nuisance reaction is of considerable significance in the development of limiting values. A limitation of expected noise levels to about 62 db(a) should be sought. An increase in the lower levels of about 5 db(a) has an annoying effect, the limitations being of the perception of a loud, disturbing irritating noise, whilst a 5 db(a) increase at the upper level has the consequence of considerably increasing the feeling of subjective threatening.
