EUROPEAN CANAL CRAFT. BARGE STANDARDIZATION, COASTAL SHIPPING BARGE CARRIERS, SEAGOING BARGES AND SAFETY ASPECTS

The article discusses the need for standardisation of barges operating on both river and canal systems in Europe. Barge-carrying ships, coasters, sea-going barges and specialised craft are considered. The safety of inland waterway transportation is discussed. The main directions of future development of inland waterways are outlined, and signs are that they will be largely dictated by energy requirements, for example coal which is likely to become an important cargo. A note on propulsion is included.
