FATIGUE FAILURE OF T-JOINTS

This paper describes VERITAS' fatigue research program on tubular joints which is planned to be a design-oriented and practical approach to the problem. VERITAS' research program is supported by NTNF and Norwegian industries and is made to fit into the overall European Coal and Steel program. At this stage of the program only a limited number of test results are available. However, these results and the knowledge gained during the testing have provided clarification on issues such as crack initation and failure of the connection. Observation of the crack growth indicates that the presence of a crack in T-joints, even a sizeable one, does not seem to be synonymous with pending sudden failure. Rather, the connections exhibit remarkable fatigue life reserves. The problem of proper measurements of the SCF and its definition in the context of tubular connections is briefly touched upon. The applicability of AWS-X curve in the context of advanced stress analysis is also dealt with. The results of the tests seem to indicate that the X-curve is compatible with SCF values obtained by Finite Element calculations or with strain gauge values extrapolated to the weld toe.
