A non-linear mathematical model for the manoeuvring ship is given. It is shown that by choosing a suitable description of the forces acting on the ship, all parameters in the mathematical model may be calculated theoretically. Due to difference between theoretically and experimentally obtained parameters, it is at present necessary to determine most of the parameters experimentally. A method for determining the parameters is presented. An advantage of the method is that use of a planar motion mechanismm is avoided. The new method combines theory and experiments and uses parameter identification to find yaw-speed dependent parameters. As a first step in evaluating the method, a simulation study is made to establish a procedure for generating quasi-optimal rudder control signals for free-sailing tests in a towing tank.
