METHODS FOR TRANSPLANTING TREES

METHODEN ZUR VERPFLANZUNG VON GROSSGEHOELZEN

In the case of road widening and other works any existing trees which are in the way should not be felled but should be transplanted. Two current transplanting methods are described: tree-mover (spades), in which the tree is lifted complete with a root ball approximately 3,5 M square by means of hydraulically operated cutting blades. The second method is the washing or blowing method in which starting near the trunk the roots are exposed, depending on the type of soil, by means of jets of water or moist air. During the transport the trees are protected against drying out with foil wrappings and by spraying with suitable preparations. (TRRL)
