The passive safety of a vehicle depends fundamentally upon two factors, the occupant restraint system and the vehicle structure. This follows from the crash test in which a vehicle strikes a solid obstruction. The retardation values measured on the head and chest may not exceed the integrated values of the impact time. In the reported investigation the mixed or hybrid procedure, which represents a combination of experiment and calculation, is differentiated from the purely analytical process, which generally uses characteristic material values. With impact speeds of up to about 50 km/hour the front structure of the vehicle is permanently deformed but the vehicle shell and tail remain virtually unchanged. It is sufficient therefore in the first approximation to consider the tail and the passenger compartment as a rigid mass. The retardation process predetermined by the hybrid simulation method correlates well with the results of the actual crash tests. Not reproduced are high frequency vibrations caused by the shock waves. During the development phase a finite-element-model of the vehicle structure was produced, parallel to that of the vehicle construction, in order to get an insight into the anticipated rigidity and stressing. For this purpose a deceleration profile is used to provide the structural and non-structural forces in the required direction and a normal fem-calculation is carried out. The applicability of such quasi-statistical calculations is strictly limited and can only provide initial information on the highly stressed zones and yield commencement. The calculations carried out in this investigation show satisfactory correlation with the test data. (TRRL)
