LIMITED-RANGE ROAD VEHICLES AND TODAY'S TRANSPORT DEMANDS

The author discusses the range limitations of electric vehicles (cars) in terms of use patterns and battery development. Data on the range of vehicle journeys on an average and on a peak day (found to be a Saturday in August) are illustrated graphically (1971 data), with the suggestion that these data could be used to estimate the potential market for a given technology electric vehicle (battery type and range). Electric vehicle performance is considered by reference to lead-acid vehicles and sodium-sulphur battery vehicles, and the market prospects for such vehicles is discussed. (TRRL)
