FULL-SCALE MODEL TESTING OF REINFORCED CONCRETE SLEEPERS USED AS BRIDGE DECKING

A railway bridge at Kalpi, converted into a road bridge by using precast reinforced sleepers for the bridge deck, showed early signs of failure. Full scale model tests of sleepers were undertaken using Baker's stress block method. This paper describes the tests at both the design and ultimate loads. It is concluded that failure was due to heavy impact, and an increase in bending moments at the supports. (TRRL)
