IN CRASH TEST: CRUMPLE ZONES AT THE EDGE OF HIGHWAYS. HOW WALLS AND LIGHTING COLUMNS MAY BE MADE SAFER
IM CRASHTEST: RETTENDE KNAUTSCHZONEN AM STRASSENRAND. WIE MAN MAUERN UND LICHTMASTEN ENTSCHAERFT
This paper is concerned with methods of making stone walls, lighting columns, steel protective barriers and iron piers safer, so that impacts with vehicles after an accident are less damaging. A number of crash photographs illustrate these considerations and demonstrate those ideas on which technologists, both at home and abroad are working in order to produce effective crumple zones. Thus an original guidance system for kerbs is shown, which steers the vehicle at sharp curves and very high speeds back to its direction of travel, without damaging the bodywork. (TRRL)
