A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF CONCRETE MIX DESIGN PROCEDURES

The paper presents the results of a comparative study of different methods of designing concrete mixes. Using ordinary portland cement, sand and crushed granite aggregates, mixes for concrete of grades M150, M300 and M450 were designed in accordance with Road Note No 4, the American Concrete Institute and Murdock's methods. Standard tests were carried out to determine the compressive strength of concrete. The results show that Murdock's method used the minimum cement content for concrete in the low and medium and strength ranges, and Road Note No 4 method gave economical mixes especially in the high-strength range.(a) (TRRL)
