BENZO(A)PYRENES AS INDICATORS FOR POLYCYCLIC AROMATIC HYDROCARBONS IN MOTOR VEHICLE EXHAUST GASES

BENZO (A) PYREN ALS INDIKATOR FUER POLYZYKLISCHE AROMATISCHE KOHLENWASSERSTOFFE IN KRAFTFAHRZEUG-ABGASEN

The percentage content of individual components of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in the exhaust gases of passenger cars with Otto motors has the same order of magnitude for all types of vehicles; and the ratio of the individual components to the sum total op all polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (pak) is almost constant. This behaviour makes it possible to use benzo(a)pyrenes as indicators for total pak content in the exhaust gases with adequate accuracy. Moreover the basic pattern of pak-composition enables conclusions to be drawn concerning emission sources during pollution control measurements. (TRRL)
