AN ANALYSIS OF VARIATIONS IN RADIAL FORCES IN TYRES CAUSED BY NON-UNIFORMITY

EINE ANALYSE DER DURCH NON-UNIFORMITY VERURSACHTEN RADIALKRAFTSCHWANKUNGEN VON LUFTREIFEN

Using a drum test rig for the measurement of dynamic wheel forces, it is possible to measure normal forces in the tyre contact area without mounting a measuring apparatus on the sample. This forms the prerequisite for an economic series investigation, from which it is possible to ascertain not only the variations in radial forces but also their effect upon the construction of the vehicle. First results show that various causes are responsible for these variations. The fundamental tests have confirmed that variously considered causes lead to the variations and that from the process and behaviour under different service conditions one can relate the variations to the corresponding tyre abnormalities. This provides the basis for a series investigation which shows the most frequently occurring tyre abnormalities. If the frequency of the individual abnormalities are known, it is possible to recognise the problem of tyre variations and to solve it with a high degree of efficiency. (TRRL)
