RESISTANCE TO CREEP OF A CLAYEY SOIL MASS SUBJECT TO LANDSLIDES

The authors present the results of a laboratory study of the influence of a previous short-term deformation on the strength of clayey soil, with a view to evaluating the resistance of the slope to creep. Simple compression tests (with a controlled rate of increased load) were conducted on different disturbed and undisturbed clays. It is shown that whatever the duration of the load and the rate of deformation, the soil strength does not decrease as long as a given critical deformation (corresponding to the beginning of the failure of brittle links and to the deformation of localized shear surfaces) is not reached. The knowledge of stress distribution in a slope and of the zones of maximum number of faults should permit the location of possible landslips. (TRRL)
