PHOSPHOGYPSUM. USE OF AN INDUSTRIAL BY-PRODUCT IN ROAD CONSTRUCTION

LE PHOSPHOGYPSE - UTILISATION D'UN SOUS-PRODUIT INDUSTRIEL EN TECHNIQUE ROUTIERE

The whole number presents general views on phosphogypsum and contains 11 articles. In the field of pavement layers, five articles describe laboratory tests and experiments carried out to study the use of phosphogypsum in three fields: (1) as activating agent in roadbases stabilized with granulated slag-gravel or sand-slag; (2) as activating agent in roadbases stabilized with fly-ash/lime; (3) in the manufacture of "phosphocement" containing ground slag, phosphogypsum and soda. Results show that very high mechanical performance can be reached. In the field of earthworks, six articles first describe the geotechnical characteristics of phosphogypsum, its hydrodynamic behaviour and its behaviour under load. Then the different uses of phosphogypsum are examined either in the construction of embankments (mention is made of placing, settlement and fissuration problems) or in the building of improved subgrades or stabilized shoulders. Lastly, possible pollution arising from the use of such a by-product is considered. Results of experiments are presented. (TRRL)
