OBSERVATIONS OF SOIL MOVEMENTS CAUSED BY THE EMBANKMENT OF AN ABUTMENT

CONSTATATIONS SUR LES MOUVEMENTS DU SOL PROVOQUES PAR LE REMBLAI D'UNE CULEE

This article presents the results of a number of measurements made on an island in the Seine, on which an embankment was built. The problem was to know the stresses imposed on the foundations of an abutment by soil movements during backfilling operations. A computer was first used to test the influence of horizontal displacements on the foundations using the method of the modulus of subgrade reaction applied to the relative soil/pile displacement, then the horizontal displacements caused by backfilling were evaluated with an elastic model. Because the validity of the model was not absolute, a follow-up study was conducted of the vertical and horizontal displacements. (TRRL)
