GRAVEL-CEMENT. MANUFACTURE, LAYING AND BEHAVIOUR AT AN EARLY AGE - STRENGTHENING WITH SLOW SETTING GRAVEL-CEMENT UNDER TRAFFIC. EXPERIMENTAL SITE

GRAVES-CIMENT - FABRICATION, MISE EN OEUVRE ET COMPORTEMENT AUX JEUNES AGES - RENFORCEMENT SOUS CIRCULATION EN GRAVE-CIMENT A PRISE RETARDEE, CHANTIER EXPERIMENTAL

In the context of coordinated strengthening operations, an experimental site where slow-setting gravel-cement was used was set up in 1975. The work was carried out over 33,8 km of national roads rn92 - 518 - 532 and 531 in the department of the isere (between valence and grenoble). 140000 metric tons of gravel-cement were utilized. Laboratory studies of mix-design formulae were conducted, the results of which are presented together with the tests and observations during the manufacture and laying of the slow-setting gravel-cement. At the end of the study, the proportion of 4,3% of cement was adopted together with retarder in the proportion of 1,1% of the weight of cement. No particular problems arose during manufacture. A grader was used for spreading over half the width of the carriageway enabling traffic to flow fairly freely. The laying process adopted (first spreading - compaction - second, spreading - final compaction) made fine levelling by scraping or addition of gravel-cement unnecessary. The protective surface dressing was always placed before traffic was allowed. The gravel-cement layer, carefully compacted and protected with surface dressing behaved satisfactorily because of its fairly rapid stiffening. Long-term observations are being conducted on six 600-M experimental sections. (TRRL)
