GRAVEL-CEMENT. MANUFACTURE, LAYING AND BEHAVIOUR AT AN EARLY AGE - SPREADING AND COMPACTION OF GRAVEL-CEMENT. OBSERVATIONS ON CONSTRUCTION SITES IN BRITANNY

GROVES-CIMENT - FABRICATION, MISE EN OEUVRE ET COMPRORTEMENT AUX JEUNES AGES - REPANDAGE ET COMPACTAGE DES GRAVES-CIMENT - CONSTATATIONS REALISEES SUR LES CHANTIERS DU PLAN ROUTIER BRETON

Several road construction methods were tested in Britanny during the extensive road construction programme in this part of France. This article outlines the conclusions reached over several years concerning the use of various gravel-cement spreading techniques: graders, autograders, slip form pavers, finishers, etc. The statistical study of test section compaction experiments and gamma densitometer measurements at the time of acceptance of the pavement layers shows the magnitude of the dispersions usually observed and the average level of densities in relation to the optimum modified Proctor test density. It was also shown that the density at the bottom of a layer depends on the rigidity of the support of the compacted layer. (TRRL)
