Collaboration, Creativity, Compromise, and Conclusion: U.S. Coast Guard modifies the Port of Miami anchorage area

The Port of Miami anchorage area was reduced into two smaller anchorage areas in July 2017 as a result of a multi-year process with no specific funding mechanism. In addition to the lack of dedicated funds, the presence of protected coral species complicated implementation of the change. However, ultimately the newly designed anchorage areas successfully protect more than 600 acres of coral reef without negatively impacting the reasonable needs of navigation. It took a broad effort with multiple rounds of public input and rulemaking proposals, involving the U.S. Coast Guard, the National Marine Fisheries Service Protected Resources Division, the National Weather Service, the Biscayne Bay Pilots Association, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, and Nova Southeastern University.
