PILES WITH ENLARGED BASES IN SWELLING SOILS

SVAI S USHIRENNYM OSNOVANIEM V NABUKHAYUSHCHIKH GRUNTAKH

The author presents the results of an experimental study of the behaviour of bored piles with enlarged bases, in two swelling clays (of the aral and quaternian types). He gives the laws governing the upthrust of piles as a function of their geometrical characteristics (penetration and diameter of enlargement) and underlines the necessity of taking account of a reduction in the friction of the soil along the shaft and under the enlarged section by introducing into the calculations a reduction coefficient, which depends on the characteristics of the piles and the swelling soils. The results obtained have been used in the analysis of various foundations for industrial structures in Kazakhstan. (TRRL)
