THE CHAPTER OF THE SNIP REGULATIONS II - 18 - 76 "FOUNDATIONS ON FROZEN SOIL"

GLAVA SNIP II-18-76 "OSNOVANIYA I FUNDAMENTY NA VECHNOMERZLYKH GRUNTAKH"

The article describes the contents of this new section of the Soviet Construction Standards SNIP, which came into force on 1st January 1978, in place of several earlier texts (dating from 1966 to 1972). This regulation deals with the design of foundations on various types of frozen soil, sometimes in seismic regions, for all types of structures including bridges and water pipes. Although problems specific to subgrades under dams, highways, airports and railways are not specially studied, many of the points contained in this standard, particularly the nomenclature of frozen soils is applicable also to such structures. The accent is placed on the technico-economic choice of foundations, especially deep foundations, depending on whether the soils remain frozen or not after construction. The necessity of observations of the construction and systematic external surveillance is emphasised. (TRRL)
