THE BEHAVIOUR UNDER TRAFFIC OF ASPHALTIC CONCRETE AND GRAVEL STABILIZED WITH BITUMEN CONFORMING TO THE SETRA-LCPC DIRECTIVES

LE COMPORTEMENT SOUS TRAFIC DES BETONS BITUMINEUX ET GRAVES-BITUME CONFORMES AUX DIRECTIVES SETRA-LCPC

The author reviews the behaviour of bituminous mixtures and gravel stabilized with bitumen since the preparation of the SETRA and LCPC directives. In the first part he analyses the results obtained with mixtures o/14 in layers 8 cm thick, prepared from different mix-design formulae. Often the use of a hard bitumen with a binder content of the order of 5.8% and 7 to 8% of fines, and with gap-graded aggregates gives very good results regarding resistance to tracking and to studded tyres in winter. Improvement in the skidding resistance is less clear. Preparation and placing of these 0/14 asphaltic concretes require particular care in order to avoid segregation. In the second part, the author deals with gravel stabilized with bitumen since the publication of the directive in 1972. It appears that it is preferable to avoid the use of thick layers 20 to 25 cm thick and to lay two courses instead. The laying is difficult (particularly the construction of longitudinal joints). Precautions must be taken both in manufacture and in laying. But good results are obtained as far as resistance to deformation is concerned. Cracking is still observed sometimes. These tests are being carried out in order to study new mix formulae. (TRRL)
