OPTIMUM DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS FOR ARCH BRIDGES
A recent detailed analysis of encastre steel and cast iron arch bridges has highlighted the importance of the designer (or analyst) understanding the main optimum design features of arch bridges at the outset. This paper considers the effects of arch profile, varying cross-section, hinges at the abutments and/or at the crown, rib depth, grade of material and possible truss action, in relation to dead load, live load and temperature stresses.
