METALOGRAPHIC ANALYSIS OF FAILURES AND DEFECTS IN MOTORCAR PARTS
ANALISIS METALOGRAFICO DE FALLOS Y DEFECTOS EN PIEZAS DE AUTOMOVIL
Selected cases of motorcar parts (fore-and-aft rods, gearbox shafts, jointed steering columns, stub axles, fixed bearings, steering ball joint, piston rod, etc.) have been chosen from many possible examples, where metalographic analysis has permitted the cause of failures in operation and faulty craftmanship attributable to the material, to its handling or to wrong use while in service, to be established. The way the analysis was conducted is explained here, as well as its decisive nature and the possibility of using the result to correct such failures by changing the material or the process, or recommending an improved quality control in the manufacturing process or in the assembly stages. In routine metalurgical control practice, metalographic analysis has proved an irreplaceable instrument. (TRRL)
