HARMONIC RESPONSE OF SANDS: PART II: MODEL APPLICATIONS AND ANALYSIS OF THE RESULTS

RESPUESTA ARMONICA DE ARENAS: PARTE II: APLICACIONES DEL MODELO Y ANALISIS DE LOS RESULTADOS

This paper is a continuation of the first part, published in the same bulletin (no 125, January-February, 1978, pp. 9-32), where the bases of the "harmonic response" model for sand behaviour were given together with the derivation of the model equations. After a review of the basic hypotheses and a summary of the equations governing sand behaviour according to the model, the paper contains a large number of applications to laboratory test conditions (uniformity of stresses and strains), including cylindrical triaxial tests, both drained and undrained, in compression and extension, one-dimensional consolidation, true triaxial tests at constant b and plane strain tests. All the applications have been made for a selected set of sand constants, four initial densities and different stress levels. Also, the influence of varying the values of the parameters has been investigated. Model predictions show an excellent agreement with typical qualitative test results. Particularly interesting are the shape of the stress-strain and volume change curves in drained tests, the differences in peak strength between compression and extension for a given density, the stress paths and the pore pressures set up in undrained tests, the concordance with Cornforth's findings in one-dimensional consolidation, the predicted behaviour in terms of both deformation and strength in the triaxial tests and the deviator stresses versus strain curves and the evolution of b during plane strain tests. The paper ends with some considerations on the model limitations and the perspectives of future developments. (TRRL)
