THE GYRATORY TEST MACHINE: ITS APPLICATION TO THE COMPACTION OF BITUMINOUS MIXES IN THE LABORATORY. COMPARISON WITH OTHER COMPACTING METHODS

The compaction of paving layers on the actual site involved requires a detailed study since the heavy axle loads and high contact pressures exerted by heavy vehicles cause differential post-compaction altering of the internal structure of the mix concerned, varying its void ratio and rheological behaviour. This article studies the various compacting techniques, their advantages and disadvantages and particularly those of the gyratory test machine which compacts the mixes by a combination of the effects of pressure and kneading acting over a variable time. The influences of these parameters (vertical pressure, degree of mixing, energy application time) on the values determining the compaction are analysed. (TRRL)
