This project forms a major portion of the ring road system round Cape Town's central business district. The fifth contract out of eight was due for completion in November 1977. A computer-simulated road network using the 1991 trip matrix was used to determine anticipated traffic volumes on individual ramps. A description is given of the design of the four separate elevated carriageways and the concrete balustrades. The post-tensioned superstructures comprisebox cross-sections with number of cells depending on overall width, and 3.7 M cantilevers. The carriageways are supported on single column piers, a vee-shaped notch at the top of the columns providing a bearing seating for a deck with steep superelevation. The majority of the structures are located on hydraulic fill and founded on Franki piles. The photographs illustrate the progress to Dec 1976. (TRRL)
