In the opening part, the author gives a complete historial review of making the design, with interesting details from the start of design work to the start of construction work, and also concerning the construction work itself. The tunnel is 5070 metres long, has already been bored through, and will be finished in 1979. Basic geological details are given, both forecast and actually recorded for the region of construction, together with the drawings of forecast and actual geological longitudinal section. The chief features of the tunnel are drawn and described and the tunnel equipment reviewed. Under the heading "Trade and Economic Significance of the Tunnel", the author states that by driving the Tunnel Ucka and building the corresponding road network, the distance between the central parts of Istra and Rijeka will be reduced, which will favourably affect investments in Istra. The distance by road from Rijeka to Pazin will be reduced by 35 kilometres. All the six variants of the tunnel are shown in tabular form and the traffic load forecast through the tunnel until the year 2000. The techniques of driving the tunnel are also described and the basic system of timbering. Articles like this, in which basic information is given, including the difficulties and experiences in designing and construction, are very useful and interesting to all designers and constructors who are concerned or will be concerned with similar problems and they can be the means of saving much money and time.
