NEW TECHNIQUES IN HIGHWAY EQUIPMENT

NUEVA TECNICA EN LOS EQUIPOS VIALES

The continuing development of world-wide traffic makes asphalt paving increasingly desirable because of its versatility and because its thickness can be easily adapted to present and future needs. Work can be carried out without stopping traffic, and asphalt presents a good riding surface. The author discusses the relative advantages of the batch mix asphalt plant, the traditional continuous system, and the drum-mixer system. His paper includes chapters on new construction; or cleaning the highway surface and pulverizing the bituminous binders; on placing and compaction of the hot-mix asphalt; and on training technicians. Lack of technicians in developing countries impedes the initiative of the governmental agencies, and Marini S.p.A has set up simulation panels representing actual hot-mix asphalt plants to help speed up the training process.
