Winter Service Strategies and Climate Change on Zagreb - Macelj Motorway in Croatia

Winter maintenance on the Zagreb – Macelj motorway is a very important maintenance segment for the traffic safety issue and for the budget. Climate change and unfavorable weather conditions have significant influence on road conditions as well as on winter maintenance. Comparing temperatures and precipitation amounts in different climate period, future trends could be predicted, together with the consumption of spreading materials. According to the results of this paper, if average temperatures rise for 0.6°C and precipitation amounts stay on the same level (prediction from climate model RegCM), comparing the periods 1961-1990 and 2011-2040, average salt consumption will be reduced for 5%. If a temperature rise of 0.6°C will be followed with a precipitation amount rise for 21.8% (as it was in the period 2009-2014), the average salt consumption will stay on the same level as it was in 1961-1990. Extreme and extraordinary weather events were also analyzed: long lasting ice rain, snowfall on extremely low temperatures, snowfall out of ordinary in a winter season, ice on measured temperatures above zero and huge differences in the amount of snow between the seasons. Conclusion is that maintenance departments should be prepared for each winter season as it will be the toughest one because weather conditions a for specific season could not be predicted.
